As a parent of former students and a grandparent of children currently in Klein Schools, I care deeply about the quality of education and the well-being of all children in our district. I have been hearing from many parents who are frustrated and concerned about the challenges they face when their children who have Individual Education Programs (IEP) or Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP). These are programs and plans that are designed to help students with special needs or behavioral issues succeed in school. However, some parents feel that their children are not getting the support they need, or worse, that they are being mistreated by some teachers or staff members.
According to the Texas Education Agency, there are 6,503 students with disabilities in Klein Schools, which is about 11.5% of the total student population. Of these, 4,897 have IEPs and 1,606 have BIPs. Some parents have reported to me that their children are not receiving the services they are entitled to, or that they are facing barriers and delays in getting their IEPs or BIPs approved or implemented. Some parents also share stories of their children being bullied, humiliated, or isolated by some teachers or staff members who do not understand or respect their needs. These experiences can have a negative impact on the children's self-esteem, academic performance, and mental health.
If I am elected to the Klein School Board, I will make it my priority to ensure that all parents and children with IEPs or BIPs are treated with dignity and respect, and that they receive the support they need to thrive in school. I will do this by:
• Establishing clear and transparent policies and procedures for developing, reviewing, and implementing IEPs and BIPs, and for resolving any disputes or complaints that may arise.
• Ensuring there is a system of accountability and oversight to monitor the quality and effectiveness of IEPs and BIPs, and that any violations or misconduct are promptly investigated and addressed.
• Engaging with parents and students with IEPs or BIPs, and listening to their feedback and concerns, and involving them in decision-making processes.
I believe that every child in Klein Schools deserves a safe, supportive learning environment, and that every parent deserves to have a voice and a choice in their child's education. I have seen firsthand how IEPs and BIPs can make a difference in a child's life, and I want to make sure that every child with special needs or behavioral issues has access to the best possible education and opportunities. That is why I am running for the Klein School Board, and that is why I need your vote. Together, we can make Klein Schools a place where every child can succeed.
Please donate if you can and please volunteer! Let’s make that change happen!
